The title for this drawing popped into my head one morning after I had been researching the vast subject of Earth Sciences for a commissioned work for a University Natural Sciences Building ( https://state-of-oregon-art-collection.org/final/Portal.aspx?lang=en-US ) It was a perfect title in so many ways, and almost eerily synchronistic, as I later discovered that one of the definitions of quintessence describes the fifth and highest element in ancient and medieval philosophy that permeates all nature and is the substance composing the celestial bodies. This drawing celebrates the Earth Sciences and works it's way visually through the elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and then Ether- the fifth element. Interestingly the symbol for Ether/Quintessence is the hexagon and the underlying pattern that I drew in pencil before starting this work was a matrix of hexagons.
